So, you’re thinking about diving into the world of original oil paintings online? Fantastic choice! There’s something magical about owning a original piece of art that’s been crafted by an artist’s hand. But the internet can be a wild and scary jungle when it comes to finding genuine, original oil paintings. How do you know what’s real? What’s worth your hard-earned cash? And where do you even start?

Let's talk about the process. Grab a cup of tea or coffee, or something cool if you live in a lovely hot place:) and let’s explore how to find those stunning original oil paintings online that will make your space sing.

Why Original Oil Paintings Online Are Worth the Hunt

First off, why bother with original oil paintings at all? Why not just grab a print or a poster? Well, original oil paintings have a soul. They carry the artist’s energy, brush strokes, and texture that no print can replicate. Plus, they often appreciate in value over time.

When you buy original oil paintings online, you’re not just decorating your walls - you’re investing in a story, a moment frozen in time. And thanks to the internet, you can access artists and galleries from all over the world without leaving your couch.

But here’s the catch: the online art market is huge and sometimes a bit overwhelming. You want to avoid fakes, overpriced pieces, or art that just doesn’t speak to you. So, how do you navigate this?

How to Spot Authentic Original Oil Paintings Online

Okay, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. Spotting an authentic original oil painting online can feel like detective work, but it’s totally doable with a few tricks up your sleeve.

  1. Check the Artist’s Credentials

Look for artists with a solid portfolio, exhibitions, or a professional website. Many artists share their process and inspiration, which adds credibility. If you don't see what you are looking for, ask, many websites give you just a glimpse behind the curtain, genuine artists with genuine work will be delighted to talk to you and give you lots more information.

  2. Look for and Ask For Detailed Photos

Originals oil paintings have texture and depth. Zoom in on the photos to see brush strokes, layering, and the richness of the paint. If the seller only has flat, low-res images, be cautious. Again, ask. Many websites do not allow high-res images.

  3. Ask for Provenance

Provenance is the history of the artwork. Where did it come from? Has it been exhibited or sold before? Sellers who provide this info are usually more trustworthy. If this information is not on the website, ask, artist's love to connect with people interested in their work.

  4. Read Reviews and Ratings

If you’re buying from a gallery or platform, check what other buyers say. Positive feedback is a good sign. But, if the artist or the website is new, they may not have established a reputation, don't exclude them from your search, better prices often lurk down this path!

  5. Understand the Medium

Oil paintings have a distinct look and feel. If the description says “oil on canvas” but the image looks like a print, something’s off. There are many mediums, don't feel that the only medium of importance is oil, consider acrylic, pastel, pencils, watercolors, lino prints as well as a whole gamut of tactile mediums like weaving and embroidery. Don't stop there, think hand woven basketry! But this blog is about oil paintings, I will stay with the program for now:)

  6. Return Policy and Guarantees

A reputable seller will offer a return policy or authenticity guarantee. This safety net is crucial when buying art online. Not all artists sign their paintings, not all artists sign their painting in an obvious place, so this is no longer an indicator. But if asked, the artist will provide you with both a return policy and authenticity guarantees.

Remember, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your gut and don’t rush.

Visualize the piece on your wall. There are many virtual programs available where you can "try it out" in your space. Consider this. Don't feel constrained, if you wanted a ocean painting and an abstract "speaks" to you, consider it, you may even want to consider a different room! The worst things that I have ever done is to not buy a piece that spoke to me, those are my biggest regrets!

Where to Find Original Oil Paintings Online That Speak to You

Now, where exactly should you look? There are tons of options, but here are some of my favorite places to discover original oil paintings online:

  • Artist Websites and Social Media

Many artists sell directly through their websites or at represented by galleries or other outlets. Buying directly from the artist is a great way to support creators directly and get a unique piece.

  • Online Art Marketplaces

Platforms dedicated to original art often vet their sellers. They offer a wide range of styles and price points. Sadly bricks and mortar galleries are becoming fewer and fewer, but ask the artist if there are places where you can see their art "in the flesh". Sometimes they exhibit at "pop up" galleries, craft shows or other venues.

  • Virtual Galleries and Exhibitions

Some galleries have embraced the digital age and host virtual exhibitions where you can browse and buy original oil paintings.

  • Auction Sites

If you’re feeling adventurous, auctions can be a treasure trove. Just be sure to research the piece and seller thoroughly.

If you want to skip the guesswork, you can always buy original oil paintings online from curated collections that focus on unique, handcrafted art. It’s like having a personal art concierge! If you don't find what you are looking for, talk to the artist. Many artists are more than happy to create something just for you. This is called a "commission", ask the artist if they accept commissions and what their rules are around this. Do they want a deposit, how much for what size and what medium. Are you obliged to take the piece whether you like it or not. Would they adapt the final piece to your meet your requirements and choice.

If you see something that you like in their portfolio but it is the wrong size or it is not the color palette that you want or need, ask if they would be prepared to do something similar that would would for you.

Have fun, perhaps start off buying something small and inexpensive from their portfolio to gauge how the transaction runs and if you like the "feel" of their work once you get it into your hands. Many artists will even be prepared to "rent" you a piece so that you can try it out in your space. Ask, the worst that can happen is that they say "no"!

Tips for Buying Original Oil Paintings Online Without Regrets

Buying art online can be thrilling but also nerve-wracking. Here are some practical tips to make sure you end up with a painting you love:

  • Set a Budget

Original oil paintings can vary wildly in price. Decide what you’re comfortable spending before you start browsing.

  • Consider Size and Space

Measure your wall space and think about where the painting will hang. Sometimes a smaller piece packs a bigger punch.

  • Ask Questions

Don’t hesitate to contact the seller or artist. Ask about the painting’s history, materials, or even the story behind it.

  • Request Additional Photos

If you want to see the painting from different angles or in natural light, just ask.

  • Check Shipping and Insurance

Original paintings need careful handling. Make sure the seller ships securely and offers insurance.

  • Think Long-Term

Will this painting still resonate with you in five or ten years? Art is a lifelong companion, so choose something meaningful.

Bringing Your New Original Oil Painting Home

Once you’ve found that perfect original oil painting online and it’s on its way, what’s next? Here are some tips to make sure your new treasure shines in your home:

  • Unpack Carefully

Handle the painting gently and inspect it for any damage during shipping.

  • Frame It Right

A good frame can enhance the painting’s beauty and protect it. Consider professional framing if you want to be extra sure. I am particularly partial to unframed pieces on thicker "gallery" canvases. Consider this option.

  • Choose the Best Spot

Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading. Pick a wall where the painting can be admired without risk of bumps or moisture.

  • Maintain It

Dust your painting gently with a soft brush or cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals.

  • Share Your Find

Show off your new art on social media or invite friends over for a mini gallery tour. Art is meant to be enjoyed and talked about!

Finding original oil paintings online is a journey filled with discovery, excitement, and a bit of detective work. The reward is worth every click and scroll. Your walls will thank you, and you’ll have a story to tell every time you glance at your new masterpiece.

Happy hunting!
