ABOUT creatif RED SKY STUDIOs and WORKSHOPs

We have spent years searching for the perfect home, we have finally found a wonderful house on acreage surrounded by hills and a sky that constantly changes.  Our days now often begin and end with a vibrant sunrise or sunset that compels  one to reach for the watercolors!  As a huge added bonus, there are wonderful studio spaces and workshops begging to be filled with creativity!

Born in Africa, my soul still roams the Savannah.  I gently yearn for the wide skies, unique smells and vibrant design and colors that abound in the region.  These regularly insert themselves into my work, often unbidden but frequently totally intentional.  I have spent some time researching the timeless artwork of the Pacific Northwest and Southwest and find that it blends very seamlessly with my African esthetic to create a new tribal energy.

My creative process is wide and varied, I paint in oils, acrylics and watercolors.  I draw in pastels, ink, charcoal and many other media.  I weave, sculpt and lino print. I have created a line of charm jewelry and sorority products, published a grown-up coloring book and opened a fashion boutique.  The boutique encouraged me to begin designing and hand painting garments and creating one-of-a-kind jewelry.  My current pieces are crafted from gorgeous organic materials, making them a joy to wear in so many ways!

In more recent years, a surprise gift of  a woodturning workshop turned into a passion and I am totally hooked on this dramatically creative process! There is something uniquely satisfying about peeling away layers of wood to find the hidden vessel within, which in turn provides a unique canvas to be  carved, airbrushed, painted, marbled, burnished and generally decorated!  I use rescued wood, wood felled by weather or necessity, destined for the fire.  There is something uniquely special about taking a chunk of a much loved tree, carefully reshaping it and returning it to the original and delighted owners in its new form.

Wood turning is a wonderfully immediate process, where even the tiniest move has instant and sometimes dramatic results!  Wood is warm, organic and, to me, infinitely unique and pleasing!  No two pieces are ever the same which provides for endless possibilities, a concept that I love!

Our hand drawn Chiwara logo

OUR LOGO

I have hand-drawn our logo, it is a modern, conceptualized image of a Chiwara, the antelope figure of the Bambara peoples of Mali.  The Chiwara represents crop fertility and growth.

A wooden carved headdress representing the Chiwara is worn and danced through the fields to encourage good harvests.

The dancers leap and turn, moving their heads and feet in a traditional dance, infinitely ancient, in the way of the antelope.

Fertility is ensured, the spirits and ancestors are honored and lessons of morality are passed to the next generation.

You will find this symbol featured on  many of my bowls, paintings and other objects.

our mission is to conceive & create one-of-a-kind statement pieces by hand through texture, contrast & mixed media.

Reinhold Niebuhr is credited with the Serenity Prayer, that includes; "give me the courage to change the things that I can, the serenity to accept the things that I can't and the wisdom to know the difference"

Red Sky Ranch gives us the big skies and the breathing space, surrounded by nature, to embrace that philosophy.

Each day brings something new, a fresh discovery, a challenge that stretches us mentally or physically, sometimes both:)

Yet another adventure, something to make us smile, often and regularly.

Another spectacular sunset that demands that I reach for my watercolors!

storm clouds over red sky ranch

A dramatic storm swept  over Red Sky Ranch last night, complete with thunder and lightening. It almost felt like being back in Africa:)

Not everyone was impressed, our elderly Goldie who has spent her whole life in the grey drizzle of Seattle had to sit on my lap until the drama was over!

Impressive storm clouds add interest to our view and cause much running around with cameras to capture the beauty.

I am building up an impressive collection of potential painting subjects!

Large rich dark red Irises

Inheriting an unknown garden brings a wealth of joys, especially when totally unexpectedly a large clump if Irises open to divulge huge, richly colored blooms.

Our "Not being "birders" category is rapidly changing!  We have "Marvin" who appears to be "Lord of the Front Garden".  We have named him "Marvelous Marvin" as our first encounter with him was 3 attempts at picking up our 120lb Goldie for his breakfast.  Clearly he has a vastly exaggerated idea of his prowess!

We have a pair of ducks that enjoy our ponds.  They are very tame so we are pretty sure that they belong to a neighbor and just come to visit to play in the ponds.

In addition to lots and lots of "regulars"  we have begun to notice the appearance of what we have tentatively identified as a Bullock's Oriel.  A pretty yellow, orange and black bird.  Thank you internet:)

We are intrigued by the appearance of tiny Hummingbirds enjoying our feeder.  We have been used to seeing their much larger cousins.

Marvellous Marvin is a Northern Harrier and resident on our ranch.

Red Sky Ranch lived up to it's name once again with this dramatic sunset!

Initially I was thinking a watercolor painting would be nice, but after studying the dynamic and rich textures in the clouds, I think this may have to be a nice, juicy oil painting.  It will be wonderful to work in oils again!

Finally getting my studio sorted.  Found my watercolors and did a quick sunset from the patio:)

We had just re-watched Independence Day when these interesting clouds appeared!

Never a dull day here on Red Sky Ranch!
